On the shelf the buyer chooses between ten similar bottles in seconds, on looks. But in household chemicals the label is also a legal document: the CLP Regulation sets even the colours and millimetres of the hazard pictograms, and the labelling must stay legible after wet hands and splashes. If a label fades, peels or the pictogram is too small, both suffer — the brand and the compliance.

What CLP requires on the label
Where a mixture is classified as hazardous, the CLP Regulation sets the label: GHS pictograms, one signal word, hazard (H) and precautionary (P) statements, and the supplier's details — firmly fixed and clearly legible. Three places where print decides compliance:
- GHS pictograms — a red diamond on point: a black symbol on white with a red border. At least 1/15 of the mandatory information area and no smaller than 1 cm². In print that means a precise red and a sharp outline — no "almost red".
- Signal word and statements — only one signal word may appear ("Danger" or "Warning"); if "Danger" is used, "Warning" is not. The H and P statements must be legible and stand out against the background.
- UFI code — the prefix "UFI:" and a 16-character code in four blocks, by which a poison centre finds the exact composition. It applies to mixtures classified as hazardous for health or physical effects, and must be clearly visible and legible.

A material that resists alkalis, moisture and abrasion
PP film
Tear-resistant, absorbs no water, takes heat and cold. Available in white, clear (a no-label look on a coloured bottle) and metalized. Best for rigid containers — bottles, canisters, jars.
PE film
A flexible film that bends with the container and does not wrinkle when the bottle is squeezed. Resistant to water, oils and chemicals. Best for dishwashing liquids and other squeeze bottles.
PET film
A stiffer, more durable film for the most demanding conditions — products that live in the garage, workshop or garden and are used intensively. Best for car care and aggressive surroundings.

UV resistance in sunlight is not automatic for every film — it depends on the specific material and its data sheet. If a garden product or car chemical will live outdoors, say so in your enquiry and Goldinken will match a suitable material. For "slippery" plastics such as HDPE, a High Tack adhesive grips securely.
Legible on the first and last day of use
CLP requires the labelling to be indelible and clearly legible, and for detergents Regulation 648/2004 requires it directly — in practice the label must stay legible for the whole life of the product. How much film can take is well shown by the BS 5609 marine standard, where labels are tested after three months in seawater; it is not mandatory for household chemicals, but it shows the level film with durable print can reach.
- Lamination — a matte or gloss film over the print protects the pictograms, UFI code and text from splashes and abrasion.
- Varnish — lighter protection that keeps the print clean and fresh in everyday use; a good base choice for indoor products.
- Adhesive by surface — High Tack for difficult plastics and rough surfaces, so the label does not lift its corners in moisture.

Which material survives the product itself?
For household chemicals the base choice is film, not paper. All resist water, oils and chemicals far better than paper.
How big must a CLP label and pictogram be?

The bottle plastic is slippery — will the label hold?
